Popular Nigerian activist and co-convener of #BringBackOurGirls, Aisha Yesufu, has berated the Federal Government over the recent advice given to the populace, to consider cycling as an alternative means of transportation in Nigeria.

Reacting to the advice through her Twitter handle, Mrs Yesufu who expressed happiness over the citizens’ level of involvement in politics, said the leaders failed to reduce the cost of governance, but want to strangulate the struggling Nigerians, for their selfish interest.

It would be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Transportation had encouraged Nigerians to consider bicycles as alternative means of transportation, as part of efforts to promote a cleaner environment and healthy lifestyle.

According to the Director of Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration, Musa Ibrahim, who stated this at a one-day stakeholders sensitisation meeting held in Abuja, the idea is to enhance and heighten the importance of cycling in Nigeria, as it will lead to a drop in road crash accidents.

Ibrahim explained that the stakeholder’s sensitisation meeting aligns with World Bicycle Day, which is marked annually on June 3 through a United Nations General Assembly resolution.

The Director stated that World Bicycle Day recognises “The uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental stewardship and health” Hence the United Nations 2023 World Bicycle Day theme: ‘Riding Together for a Sustainable Future.”

Reacting via her Twitter handle, Yesufu bemoaned that the lawmakers are trying to strangle the struggling masses.

“The beautiful thing for me is that citizens are now paying attention to the political process.

“Neither the lawmakers nor executive have reduced their cost of governance.

“They have awarded billions to themselves and tell the struggling masses to strangulate.

“One day na one day,” she tweeted.
