China has reaffirmed its commitment to support the international system centred on the United Nations and to promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
This was the message delivered by China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dai Bing, at the opening of the main session of the Fifth Committee of the 78th UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
The Fifth Committee deals with internal UN administrative and budgetary matters. Dai Bing said that China works tirelessly to uphold the UN-centred international system and to adhere to true multilateralism. He said that facing the ongoing global challenges, member states should work together to strengthen the role of the UN and fulfil their obligations.
He also said that finance serves as the foundation of and an important element underpinning UN governance. He urged all member states to shoulder their responsibilities and pay their dues in time. He said that one major contributor still had long-time arrears, which is the main cause of the UN’s liquidity crisis. He did not name the contributor, but it is widely known that the United States owes billions of dollars to the UN.
“Solving this problem requires addressing both the symptoms and root causes and avoiding reliance on short-term temporary measures,” he said.
China is the second-largest contributor to the UN regular budget and peacekeeping budget, after the United States. China has paid its dues for 2023 in full and in advance.
