The Economic Community of West African States has explained why it is taking a strong stand against the military coup leaders in Niger Republic.
The president of ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, said the region has decided to put a stop to coup detat.
Touray made this statement while addressing journalists on the current issue, according to The Nation.
He also hinted that the regional body is not ready to accept any prolong transition programme from military junta than immediate restoration of constitutional order
He, however, maintained that the activation of the ECOWAS standby force is not meant to invade Niger Repulic but to restore constitutional order.
He stated that “Niger is a signatory to the ECOWAS instruments and Protocols which spells out the means of restoring constitutional order whenever there are anomalies”.
