The Governor of Kebbi State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has said governors would continue to control local governments funds until Section 7 of the Nigeria constitution is expunged.

The governor said this on Thursday while signing the N166.985bn 2023 state’s budget into law at the Government House Chambers in Birnin Kebbi, according to Daily Trust.

While Bagudu affirmed that the call for local governments autonomy was very fundamental, he, however, added that it was yet a dicey situation, because until section 7 of Nigeria constitution is amended they would never be granted autonomy.

He also noted that for local government autonomy to be possible, the House of Assembly of all 36 states must be in agreement for the National Assembly to amend section 7 of the constitution.

Bagudu said his administration was not against local government autonomy as being insinuated in some quarters.
