Disclosing this, in referencing Honourable Abbas’ speech at the recently held 18th Commonwealth Speakers’ and Presiding Officers’ Conference, in Yaounde, Cameroon, with the theme: African Parliaments and the Agenda 2063,” the Deputy Spokesman, Nigeria House of Representatives, Philip Agbese MHR, described the emergence of the speaker if the 10th Assembly, as the opportunity to eliminate the trust deficiency between the government and the people.

Agbese stated that the speaker had during a robust event that reiterated the role of the parliament in the socio-economic development, highlighting the trust deficit between the citizens and government.

According to him, Hon. Abass had expressed the need for the parliamentarians to protect the interest of the people, noting that they are the hope and representatives of the common people.

“The people we represent, our constituents, rely on us to uphold the principles of democracy, to safeguard their interests, and to promote their welfare.

“Thus, openness, transparency, and accountability are not mere buzzwords but essential pillars upon which we can build a resilient democracy that serves the needs and aspirations of our people,” Hon Abbas said.

However, the Deputy Spokesperson said with the current realities in the country, and the difficulties facing the people, who have put all their hopes in the fair legislation that will improve the standard of living, what came from the speaker indicates that the 10th Assembly in Nigeria is poised to be different than what we have experienced in the past.

He stated that the speaker reminded all of Africa’s ambitious aspirations and goals, which he noted were well captured in the concepts of a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development, noted that a lot of responsibilities are conferred on the parliamentarian as trustees, delegates, and custodians of democracy, to ensure a high standard of living, quality of life, and well-being for all citizens, and well-educated citizens and skills revolution underpinned by science, technology, and innovation.
