The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Saturday, arrived in Lagos State for an official engagement.
Upon arrival, Akpabio was received at the Presidential Wing of the Muritala Mohammed International Airport in Ikeja, the state capital.
The Senate President made this known in a tweet via his Twitter handle on Saturday.
He was received by some of his colleagues in the National Assembly.
Akpabio was the subject of a backlash in social media some days ago after he was caught in a viral video, cracking a ‘let Nigerians breathe’ joke.
The Senate President had said, “let the poor breathe”. Addressing the criticisms in a statement issued on Thursday, July 29, he said the comment, “Let the poor breathe,” was made in reference to stopping tariff hikes by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and distribution companies.
He clarified that his comment was not intended as an insult to citizens. He acknowledged the current hardships experienced due to the high cost of living in the country.
His statement explained the intention behind the joke, “was to firmly reject any plan of increasing electricity tariffs for Nigerians, considering the ongoing economic challenges that Nigerians are faced with.”
