The House of Representatives has adopted a resolute position in opposition to the National Electricity Regulatory Commission by declining the proposed elevation in electricity tariff.
This conclusion was achieved in response to a motion filed by a lawmaker representing Dala Federal Constituency, Honourable Aliyu Madaki, who expressed strong opposition to the price increase, particularly in light of the recent increase in petrol prices, which has already burdened many Nigerians.
Honourable Aliyu Madaki emphasised that such a big tariff hike is improper and disrespectful at a time when citizens are still dealing with the effects of the petrol price increase.
In light of the motion, the House has resolved to direct its committee on power, upon its establishment, to initiate deliberations with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The objective is to facilitate a shared comprehension and identify a compromise in order to tackle the suggested increase in tariffs, taking into account the prevailing economic difficulties experienced by the general public.
The legislators assert that the House of Representatives maintains its dedication to protecting the interests of Nigerian citizens and ensuring that the decisions made by regulatory entities align with the well-being of the populace.
