Candidates for governor from five political parties in Sokoto state, have urged citizens to vote peacefully and refrain from the use of violence during the upcoming governorship election.

The political parties include Senator Umaru Dahiru’s New Nigeria Peoples Party, Senator Abubakar Gada’s Social Democratic Party, Dr. Ibrahim Liman’s Africa Democratic Party, Comrade Aminu Umar’s Labour Party, and Senator Ibrahim Liman’s Africa Democratic Party.

The call was made for patriotic citizens who care about the general welfare, according to the candidates’ spokesperson, Dr. Ibrahim Liman.

Dr. Ibrahim said; “We are totally against violence and lawlessness. Peace, harmony, and rule of law, are paramount and above all interests and, therefore, shall never be compromised for whatever motive a group of people may have.”

He firmly denounced statements made by some political figures in the state, saying that the action amounted to disobeying the law and had the potential to provoke violence and anarchy of the ongoing general election.

He added; “It is very sad to note that prior to these utterances, acts of lawlessness including snatching of ballot boxes, use of local weapons, and intimidation, were recorded during the last presidential election.

“We, therefore, wish to appeal to the law enforcement agencies and the INEC to be more vigilant in monitoring the activities of all politicians and their supporters without fear or favour according to the oath they have taken, and act appropriately whenever found necessary.”
