The disgruntled Osun State national assembly candidates of the New Nigeria Peoples Party have revealed why they dumped their party’s presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to support his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Bola Tinubu.

In a press release issued by the group’s leader, Clement Bamigbola, on Monday, the candidates said that their support for Tinubu was proof of the party’s disintegration in the state.

Bamigbola’s comment was a response to a statement attributed to the state party’s acting chairman, Abdusalam Abiola, who had earlier claimed that the four candidates who had pledged their support for Tinubu were like liabilities the NNPP would not miss.

The four NNPP candidates—Clement Bamigbola for Osun Central Senatorial, Bolaji Akinyode for Osun West Senatorial, Olalekan Fabayo and Oluwaseyi Ajayi for Boluwaduro/Ifedayo/Ila and Ijesa South Federal Constituencies—had abandoned Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso for Tinubu, citing a lack of transparency in the national leadership of their party.

Reacting to the claim, the dissatisfied candidates said, “Our decision to support Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general elections serves as evidence of the Osun NNPP’s imminent collapse.

“It is unfortunate to see the so-called acting chairman referring to the party candidates as irrelevant members. It shows the man in question knows nothing about politics. As of today, NNPP is dead in Osun state.”
